Population Current Events

  1. In the essay above, it talks about the rise of the homeless rate in L.A. The L.A times investigates about the tough situation going on in many L.A neighborhoods. Many people are experiencing a lot of stress. This article shines light on the fact that the homeless population has gone up by about 5,000 people next year. That is not ok because it causes overpopulation.

I think that this issue is bad. Many places are getting pricier in terms of money and stuff like that.Housing costs are up and fast food restauraunts are asking for more money. Prices will keep going up and homeless people will keep going up.

  2. I think that the homeless population is critical. The population for the homeless is increasing dramatically over the years. Reasons for it is the pricing of homes are raising and not many jobs for the people.

    2. In the essay above, it shows the rate of the homeless population increasing more and more over the years. First of all, the pricing on houses are raising. Secondly, the jobs are not available for many. Lastly, the population is showing that it is causing more problems for people of policemen shooting unarmed homeless man and crowding are streets with cars and tents all over.

  3. The article “More Homelessness in the Streets of LA” by the editors of newsela, it explores the idea of how many people are on the streets of LA. They are finding people outside of even schools. More and more people are living on the streets. It’s sad that so many people are on the streets, but in some way they made that choice.

I think that all the homless people on the streets is very sad, but i think it is also bad. There is so many of them and there is more and more growing. I think its kind of scarey now because they are even outside of schools.

  4. In the article “As the World’s Population Booms, Will It’s Resources Be Enough For Us?”
by Dennis Dimick explores if the world will be able to sustain us.
He brings up the fact that since the human population has gone up significantly that we have started to consume more than we can supply. Some people have come up with the idea that our world's population will increase significantly by 2100. This would make us consume even more and we could run out.
I think that this is a good article because it gives a good perspective as to what is going on in the world. It explains that since our world's population has risen we have started to consume much more. That is a problem that might get worse because we will continue to increase in population size and we will consume much more which will cause many problems.

    1. It is very good that you put in perspective a growing population needs more resources, which boosts up resource use. I think that you should add more detail on what happens if we consume it all or when. The last paragraph is also good.

  6. In the article entitled “Study: World Population to Stop Growing,” Amanda Onion asserts how are population is expected to increase dramatically to 9 billion then start to decrease in the year 2070. At the same time, Onion identifies that the population all depends on how many children each woman has. The author also states that population can’t just be determined by an exact number. It is an estimate of what to expect for the future. Along with that, a stable population means that each woman should have roughly 2.1 children. Finally, Onion described that we should just ready to live with an abundance of people.

I think that our world population is going to keep growing in some areas and shrinking in others. The first reason is that almost all the predictions for population in the future says that our population will increase tremendously. Another reason is that cities are growing and so will families. I think that women are going to want to have more kids anyways. This whole subject has different views on growing population/shrinking population. We will just have to see what happens.

    1. I agree that our population will increase in some areas and decrease in other areas depending on the amount of education and medical treatment. I learned that even though we can estimate the population in the future, it is not guaranteed that our estimation will be correct because it will depend on the amount of children women have in the future. I would like to learn which countries will have the largest population or the largest fertility rate in the future and if it will differ from the countries currently.

  7. Source Summary:
In the article, “More than 1 million people sought refuge in Europe this year, report says” the Associated Press, adapted by the Newsela staff investigates the methods and dangers of the refugees being forced to leave their home countries and migrate to European countries. First of all, the Newsela staff explains that many of the refugees traveled by boat across the Aegean Sea or the Mediterranean Sea; however, some refugees entered by land from neighboring countries. The author further explores the dangers of traveling by boat because many people have died and drowned in shipwrecks trying to reach European countries. In addition, the Newsela staff suggests that the European government will have to agree on how to handle and support the refugees. Finally, the Newsela staff suggests that war and poverty has pushed refugees out of their country forcing them to face many dangers while trying to seek a new and better life.

    Editorial:
As war and persecution are forcing people out of their home countries, nations in Europe are receiving millions of immigrants. However, the routes to these countries can be very dangerous. I think that migration routes should be made safer because thousands of people have drowned trying to reach to other countries. In addition, I think that since refugees are being forced out of their countries there should be an accessible route for refugees seeking safety. Lastly, I think that the refugees should have proper care and ways to earn an income in their new countries because they have had to leave everything behind.

  8. Article summary:

I agree with the article when it says that families should not have taken their kids out of school for that long. Some people may disagree and say that families should take their kids out of school to go to Mexico to visit family and to reconnect with their culture. That isn’t true because it is hard for the schools to make sure that the kids are caught up when they return. Plus they can use the few weeks in Winter break to go down to Mexico. Parents need to make sure that their kids are staying in school because it is really easy to fall behind, especially in the upper grades.
In the article entitled “Stress eases at schools as Hispanic students' long winter absences decline” by the Newsela staff discusses how parents need to keep their kids in school. First of all, the Newsela Staff demonstrates that parents just want to visit family and reconnect with their heritage. The author advises parents to visit during their break because it is hard for the teachers to catch the children up when they miss a few weeks of school. In addition, they happily state that the numbers of students have decreased drastically. Lastly, Newsela Staff identifies that schools are having a little less stress on them because of the declining numbers of long term absences. pic: https://d284gedng9vuu0.cloudfront.net/article_media/2016/02/hispanicstudents-break-fc80755e.jpg.885x497_q90_box-0%2C155%2C3000%2C1842_crop_detail.jpg

  9. i think that how the people of the refuges coming into the united sates.
1 during world war 2 the jewish tribe to come to the united sate for safety but the a government dint like jewish religion so that was a reasson to send them away.
2.the muslims came in because of obama wants to help them but 20 out of 1,000 refugees were terrorist to attack the united sates.
Associated Press, adapted by Newsela staff states that to show the united states how the untied states never let jews in as refugees in world war 2 and in 2015 the president of the united states is letting muslims in the united states. the difference is because in world war 2 the jews were trying to get in the united states for to be free but the government of the united states did not want to risk a german agent in the USA so they had to close all the ports and the people in the boat died and in 911 the united states let in muslims. so the police say that only 20 out of 1,000 refugees came from the middle east were in a terrorist attack to the united states.

  10. In the essay above they talk about Chinese Muslims. In my opinion this is a weird situation because I do not see a lot of Chinese Muslims. This articles explains the two different type of Chinese Muslims and how their population increased.

Overall in China the Muslim population has increased. China has a lot of muslims. There are two different types of muslims. The Islamic State is an extremist group. It wants to start its own country in the Middle East under Islamic law China discriminates against religious people — not only Salafis, but also people from other religions. Two types of Chinese Muslims Uighurs live mainly in the northwestern region of Xinjiang.Government Has Closed Many Islamic Religious Schools. One muslim says they are peace loving people. 11. Summary:

In the article entitled, “China revokes 1-child policy to pump new life into aging population,” Washington Post presents how the policy of having only one child in China has been revoked. To begin, the Washington Post explains how the policy has changed because the aging of the population in China could pose a serious problem if not changed. The author also states that because of the rapidly aging society, there is a decline in the supply of youth labor to power the economy. Finally, the Washington Post describes that even though the policy has changed, the cultural norms might influence the opinion of the population to having one child and stay the same.

    Editorial:
I think that this new policy in China will have many positive effects. The first reason it is positive is that the population will rise again and the people in China will be happy to not be as controlled by the government in this area of their lives. Another reason is that with the expected increase in population, there will be enough young people to support the economy. The population will not experience labor shortages. Finally, even though it will take a generation or so to change China’s population, it will be very beneficial to them in the long run.

    2. I think that it is good that the 1-child policy in China has been lifted because I don't think that they should have ever had that constraint. I also agree with you when you said that it will make the people in China happy again. How much will the population increase due to lifting the 1-child policy?

  12. In the article entitled “No way to stop human population growth?” Jennie Dusheck investigates how the population will keep growing even with restraints. First, Dusheck explains how 2 scientists are doing research and creating models to predict the possible population. The author describes how they realized that no matter what happens to restrain the population, it will just keep going. Lastly, she acknowledges the impact of the huge populations on the Earth, many species will become extinct and wastes will accumulate. All in all, Dusheck explores how the rising population growth is becoming more and more of a problem that cannot be stopped.
The article “No way to stop population growth?” by Jennie Dusheck is an eye opening article about the population problems. However, some people might not think that this article is very credible because, how can we know for sure if the population sizes that are predicted will come true and are true? Although people do have a right to think that way, I do not, I believe that this is a very real problem that won’t go away. I agree with the article that the exponential growth we are in now will eventually even out, but many species will become extinct. Lastly, I don’t know how we are going to solve this problem but I believe that we can find a way if we keep doing research.

  13. Summary
In the article, “Countries Can’t Cope With Aging Population” by the Newsela staff. On of the craziest facts, is seniors older than 60 will outnumber 15 year olds in 50 years. The Newsela staff states that the seniors are barely making enough to support their wives and support themselves. One suggestion brought up in this article, is many jobs will be open since not many young kids will take their place, so the older people stay employed. Some African countries and European countries are experience increased life-expectancy of men and women.

    Opinion
In my opinion, this is definitely something to have on your mind and think about it, so it doesn't have long term affects. I think this will help open up jobs, but the thing to think about is retirement age.

  14. In the article entitled “Human Population Growth Creeps Back Up,” Colin Sullivan discusses how the populations of certain countries are growing. In addition, Sullivan suggests that women in specific countries are averaging more than 5 children per family. The author acknowledges that estimating populations more than a few decades in the future can be very tricky. Next, Sullivan illustrates that immigration will help the population gain more young people, which can also lead to population growth. Finally, Sullivan states that we need to try our hardest to avoid rapid population growth.
The article “Human Population Growth Creeps Back Up” focuses on the believable fact that our human population is growing. Some people may disagree with this article because they think there is no way of knowing exactly how many children were born or how many people died. However, I personally believe that the human population throughout the world is growing bigger and bigger everyday. We need to solve this problem before it gets too out of control.

  17. In the article entitled “Homeless population rises 12 percent since 2013” in Los Angeles written by Newsela staff, investigates homeless population. First, Newsela discusses how much the homeless percent has went up. The author then interviews someone else’s thought on the high homeless rates. Next they explain why the homeless rates are so high. Finally they restate how crazy high the homeless rates are.

My thought on the high homeless rates is that it is a big problem. I’m not sure how to go about getting the homeless rates down but I definitely think they need to go down. When I drive through Marysville to get to the dirt bike track, there are endless amounts of homeless camps. I think that it makes the city look less appealing.

By 2050 the Nigerian population is expected to surpass the United States population.
In my opinion the article is very optimistic about the growing population if third world countries. I believe because the paragraph was extremely well writing and I really liked the style that the author used.

  19. In the article"Reluctance of Beijing schools to install air purifiers angers parents," LA Times explains how the schools are refusing to spend the money to install air purifiers in the classrooms so the students have cleaner air to breathe. Parents are angry because when the air quality is really bad the school days are canceled therefore the children are missing out on education.

I think that the schools should spend the money to get the air purifiers because if they don't, they are not taking care of their students and they are endangering their health by exposing them to all of the smog and pollution in the air.

  20. Homeless population rises 12 percent since 2013 in Los Angeles
In the article entitled Homeless population rises 12 percent since 2013 in Los Angeles by Newsela’s staff explains how the homeless population has increased since 2013. Next Newsela staff discusses how houses are too unaffordable for them. The author next s/he discusses that Critic Says L.A.'s Leaders Let This Happen. Finally Newsela staff acknowledges that there are a lot of homeless in the LA area even more than before.
My opinion on this is that I think that they should make more homes for the homeless because they should not have too live on the streets. they should also make alot more jobs that they can let homeless work so they can have something to do. This would probably decrease the homelless population.

  21. Summary:
In the article "In Los Angeles, more homeless people are living in cars and tents." They are living in family neighborhoods, schools and many more. It talks about how more and more homeless people starting to live in LA. They live there because houses are too expensive and not high enough paying jobs. Many people are trying to help them out and get them a home, so they don't have to live in a tent or car.

    Opinion:
I think that sucks that they don't have home to live in and someone needs to find a way to help them. Them living on the streets like they are is not good for the community or them.

  22. In the article “People are living longer but not better as social services lag”, by the newsela staff, the article addresses the booming elderly population. The world is having a crisis with the amount of elderly people. The elderly population has exploded in the last 20 years. Countries are having trouble giving enough life insurance and elderly care to the increasing population. Now older people support groups are getting the government to help with the older people.

I think this article was interesting and eye-opening to hear about how overpopulation is starting to affect all generations. I didn’t know that older people were struggling to find life insurance. Also I didn’t know that the government helps with the issues. The article was really interesting and I learned a lot about world population.

  23. Summary:

In the report entitled One Million Immigrants, the Newsela Staff and associated press explains the rising refugee crisis that is currently taking place in Europe. Then Newsela breaks it down, and talks about how ISIS Is primarily to blame for this movement, as well as other civil wars breaking out in the middle east and syria. The journalists also acknowledge that fact that many refugees are experiencing unnecessary hardships getting into the european countries. Many have tried swimming their way there, others working more for overland migrations. But still, many are dying all the same from various reasons. It was that fact that called attention to the safeties of the migration routes, where Europe has now been planning and taking action on making these movements safer, and more legal. SOme countries, Like Germany, Have welcomed these refugees with open arms. Others, such as Hungary, have begun construction of walls and fences to keep refugees out. Cold weather of the winter and spring times expect to kill even more refugees. This will continue to happen unless we enforce a plan to make routes safer and more legal for all.

    Editorial

I personally believe that Hungary has the right Idea. We should be build fences and controlling immigrants, as not to overwhelm the economies and social networks of receiving countries. If we were to take in these couple million immigrants all at once, it could cause catastrophic economic shockwaves across europe. This migration needs to be watched, controlled, and handled carefully

  24. In the article, “Homeless Population rises 12% since 2013 in Los Angeles” by Los Angeles times, They acknowledge the increase in homeless people in Los Angeles. They explain that not only has the amount of homeless people gotten bigger, they have spread throughout the city. The reason is that the cheap options (hotels, apartments, motels, etc.) they relied on are now no longer there. City councilman Bonin says, “they're outside of homes… schools….” The shelters have been filled up 85% and currently around the numbers of 9,000- 10,000.
I personally believe that the amount of homeless people is a real problem, and its not only happening in LA but everywhere. The price of living continues to go up and those that could afford bare- minimum are now the bottom feeders. With the prices of housing, tax, & other essentials to make it in our society, its almost impossible to make it easier for the less fortunate to make it too. This is a problem we are going to have to find a solution for but until then places like LA with continue to fill up with homeless people.
