    2. I find it very interesting how playing songs from her youth are causing her to remember past events. I would be interested to learn why scientists believe that this may possibly work for some patients suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. I think that if this treatment proves to be successful in many patients that it could help to treat patients today and possibly lead us to why Alzheimer's Disease occurs.

  2. In the online article, Stealing is easier in California by fox business, it addresses how a law spiked the crime rate. Some businesses in California are complaining about it is hurting business. The law reduces the punishment for shop lifting, so it is occurring more often. People assume since the punishment is less, it's not as bad. This law is being speculated and could maybe lead to disruption of social order. This of course is an exaggeration and worst case scenario.

  3. Thousands of tiny crabs have washed up on the shores of Southern California. They appeared on Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, and Hunington Beach. These are bright red crabs, called tuna crabs. They are about 1 to 3 inches long. They are not good for eating since they don't have alot of meat. People say that the increased crab population is from the weather pattern from El Nino.

    1. Wow. I didn't know crabs could be 3 inches long. That is pretty crazy. I hope people use the crabs in a good way.

  4. Last year, in the small town of Weimar a very interesting record was broken in the sport of basketball. The 8th grade Weimar Warriors persevered to a record breaking 31-3 record. This included and undefeated League record and only 3 tournament losses. The Warriors combined for a record of 57-6 in 2 years. All 15 players contributed great efforts during the season. This record may never be broken as it is very impressive.

  5. In the article entitled "California raises smoking age to 21" Joshua Berlinger and Andy Rose explain the new California law regarding the legal smoking age, location of where people can smoke, limitations on the sale of electronic cigarettes, and the positive impact it may cause. First, Joshua Berlinger and Andy Rose suggest that California has raised the smoking age from 18 to 21, and that it is illegal for everyone under the age of 21 to buy tobacco products including electronic cigarettes. The law also restricts where the tobacco products can be used in public places. The authors then explore how the new law could have a positive impact now and on generations in the future. The restrictions put on the use of tobacco could result in a quarter million fewer premature deaths, and 50,000 fewer deaths from lung cancer. Finally, Joshua Berlinger and Andy Rose suggest that California is urging other states to raise the legal age to buy and use tobacco products because it can reduce the risks of health problems and cause healthier generations of people in the future.

    1. I think that it is good that the smoking age is being raised because smoking is very harmful to people's health.

The drout in California has effected the economy greatly. jobs have been lost and fish habitat has been destroyed. the Salmon population has been slowing down because of the eggs being killed.but miners have been fiding more gold and silver in rivers and steams because of the low water levels.

    1. It would suck to be a fisher but great to be a miner. I would mind some extra money. However the decrease in fish population affects a lot more than just the fisherman. So that is not good

  9. Because of the drought in California, scientists are working on a new plan to desalinate ocean water to make it safe to drink. Although it is very expensive, the people of California need drinkable water, and they need it now. One concern is that it can harm sea life. Another possible problem is that the water that is returned to the ocean is even saltier than how it came in. They came up with a possible solution to that problem though, they are going to mix the very salty water with unsalted and undrinkable water.

    1. I had the same article and you summarized the information very well. I liked how you pointed out the solution to having too much salt put back into the ocean.

  10. In the article entitled “Bid To Raise California Tobacco Tax Nears November Ballot,” author Elliot Spagat and the Associated Press explain how tobacco prices in California are probably going to increase in the near future. Along with Spagat stating how the tobacco prices are increasing, he also said how if California passes the law, then it would be ranked ninth highest in the nation for its cigarette tax. A billionaire environmentalist, Tom Steyer, already said that he had 1 million signatures to raise the cigarette tax by $2 a pack. The tax would apply to e-cigarettes and any product with nicotine. Finally, people that want the law passed are hurrying to get all their signatures in by November 8, 2016.

Newsela staff presents the details of this project and when completed will turn as many as 56 million gallons of seawater each day into drinking water for San Diego County. This project will have many benefits, but will also cost about $1 billion. There are some possible environmental risks to consider including harming marine life and making the ocean a lot more salty. But, Newsela staff explain how there are ways to prevent this and the benefits of the project will outweigh the disadvantages.

  12. California's drought has caused many farmers to either spend extra money or to go out of business. The farmers were relieved when some rain came in during the early spring so they didn't have to spend as much money on bringing in water to their farms. Going into the summer, the farmers are worried about more and more water drying up causing less crops to grow.

  19. In the article Undocumented children eligible for medi-cal Monday, Suzanne potter explain how undocumented children will have medical insurance as a part of the Health4AllKids act. This is a big deal because now poor family's that are living in America and are immigrants can get their children the health care that they need. But this also comes with some challenges, people that oppose this say that it only encourages more immigrant family's to come to America.

  20. The article that i read focused mainly on mental health problems being related to terrorism attacks. In December of 2015 attackers stormed a house party in San Bernardino. At first police thought the attackers had mental health problems but later they found out that had relations with Islamic extremists. Democrats are saying that they need tighter gun laws but republicans say that the gun laws are not the problem and the right to bear arms is protected by the constitution.
